Military Officers Play a Crucial Role in Nation-Building: Governor
Governor Addresses Gentleman Cadets at the Indian Military Academy
Lok Bhavan Dehradun 11 March, 2026
The Governor, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd), addressed the Gentleman Cadets at the Indian Military Academy (IMA), Dehradun, today on the theme “Indian Military Officer: As a Nation Builder.” The event was attended by the Commandant of the Indian Military Academy, Lieutenant General Nagendra Singh, along with senior officers and instructors of the Academy.
In his address, the Governor said that the Indian Military Academy is not merely a training institution but a sacred place where young cadets imbibe the values of national service, discipline, and leadership. It is here that a cadet learns that placing duty above comfort, responsibility above personal gain, and the nation above self is the true hallmark of a soldier.
He said that the responsibility of a military officer goes beyond guarding the nation’s borders; officers also play a significant role in the broader process of nation-building. Through their leadership, discipline, and conduct, officers strengthen trust and stability within society.
The Governor observed that the greatest asset of an officer is his or her reputation, which is built through conduct, decision-making ability, and sensitivity toward the soldiers under their command. A good officer, he said, is not merely one who issues orders, but one who listens to the concerns of soldiers, understands their challenges, and stands with them in difficult circumstances.
Encouraging the cadets to draw inspiration from the great warriors of Indian history, the Governor referred to the exemplary courage, ethics, and vision demonstrated by Guru Gobind Singh Ji, Maharana Pratap, and Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. He urged the cadets to imbibe these values in their lives and careers.
The Governor emphasised that continuous learning is essential for a true military officer. With the changing nature of warfare and rapid technological advancements, officers must constantly update themselves with modern technologies, innovations, and new strategies. He said that a modern military officer must be not only a warrior but also a thoughtful and visionary leader. National security, he added, is strengthened not only by military power but also by the coordinated efforts of diplomacy, information systems, economic strength, and technological capabilities.
He also appreciated the increasing participation of women cadets in the armed forces, stating that their growing presence reflects the progress and empowerment of the nation. He expressed confidence that women officers will contribute significantly to taking the glory of the Indian Armed Forces to new heights through their dedication, competence, and leadership.
The Governor further said that the immense respect and trust that the Indian Army enjoys among the people of the country is the result of generations of soldiers and officers demonstrating courage, discipline, and a spirit of service. This is also the reason why, even after their service, officers continue to contribute to nation-building by taking up leadership roles in various fields.
