Governor Dr. Dhal Singh Bisen inaugurated the 52nd All India Oriental Conference at Patanjali University in Haridwar on Thursday. The three-day conference is witnessing the participation of scholars, researchers, academicians and students from across India and abroad.

Addressing the inaugural session, the Governor said that the objective of the Indian knowledge tradition is not merely intellectual development, but also to strengthen individual character, social harmony and the spirit of human welfare.

The Governor said that the study of Oriental Studies is not confined to understanding the past. It provides an opportunity to understand the evolution of Indian civilisation, the dialogue among diverse schools of thought, and the intellectual history of human society. He said that the Vedas, Upanishads, Ramayana, Mahabharata and various texts of Indian philosophy contain profound ideas relating to life, ethics, duty and social harmony.

The Governor said that under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, emphasis is being laid on the preservation and promotion of India’s cultural heritage, ancient knowledge traditions and Indian languages. He said that the vision of “Vikas Bhi, Virasat Bhi” reflects the harmonious integration of modern development with India’s cultural roots. He further noted that the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 also accords importance to the Indian knowledge tradition, mother tongues, multidisciplinary education and research.

The Governor said that through the Gyan Bharatam Mission, efforts are being undertaken towards the survey, preservation and digitisation of ancient manuscripts. These manuscripts represent an invaluable repository of India’s civilisational heritage and intellectual achievements. He emphasised that along with preserving these manuscripts, ensuring that this knowledge reaches future generations is a collective responsibility.

The Governor urged young researchers to study the original texts of ancient scriptures, their historical context and philosophical ideas. He emphasised that authenticity of sources, transparency in conclusions and intellectual integrity must be accorded the highest priority in research. On the occasion, the Governor also released various publications of the university.

The Governor said that India’s ancient traditions have always sought to connect knowledge with the welfare of society. The timeless invocation, “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayah”, reminds us that the highest purpose of knowledge is to contribute to the happiness, health and welfare of all humanity. He said that at a time when the world is facing numerous social, environmental and ethical challenges, deliberations on the principles of balance, coexistence and holistic thinking embedded in the Indian knowledge tradition can prove highly relevant and valuable.

The conference was attended by Acharya Balkrishna Ji, Vice Chancellor, Patanjali University; Swami Ramdev, Chancellor, Patanjali University; Prof. Srinivas Varakhedi, Vice Chancellor, Central Sanskrit University, along with representatives of the Bharatiya Vidvat Parishad, vice chancellors of various universities, scholars, acharyas, researchers and students.
