Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) participated as the Chief Guest at the 12th Convocation of Uttarakhand Sanskrit University, Haridwar, on Saturday. On the occasion, he conferred degrees and medals upon the students. The Governor also conferred honorary degrees upon Padma Shri folk singer Madhuri Barathwal, Dr. Anusuya Prasad Pant, Prof. Ram Kumar Sharma, and former Vice-Chancellor of Shri Lal Bahadur Shastri National Sanskrit University, New Delhi, Prof. Ramesh Kumar Pandey.
Congratulating all the students receiving degrees and medals, the Governor said that a convocation is not merely a ceremony marking the completion of education; it marks the beginning of a new journey in life and the assumption of new responsibilities towards society and the nation. Students possess the strength of knowledge, values and youthful energy, and it is their responsibility to channel these three forces towards addressing the needs of society and creating meaningful impact.
The Governor said that it is not enough to preserve Sanskrit merely as a heritage of the past; it must also be connected with the possibilities of the future. He highlighted the immense scope for research in areas such as Artificial Intelligence, digital technology, linguistics and machine learning, drawing upon Sanskrit’s scientific structure and vast literary heritage. He emphasised the need to take Sanskrit beyond the shelves of libraries and connect it with the digital world, research laboratories and global knowledge discourse.
He said that Sanskrit is not merely an ancient language but a major carrier of India’s knowledge consciousness, intellectual tradition and cultural memory. A significant part of India’s rich knowledge traditions—including the Vedas, Upanishads, philosophy, grammar, Ayurveda and Yoga—is preserved in Sanskrit. Sanskrit, he said, gives us not merely words, but also a perspective on life, discernment, a sense of duty and a spirit of human welfare.
The Governor said that, alongside teaching, students of Sanskrit have opportunities in diverse fields such as translation, research, Indian philosophy, culture, publishing, digital media and language technology. Therefore, it is essential to connect Sanskrit with employment, research, technology and innovation.
He called upon the graduating students to make five commitments: to continuously expand their knowledge, imbibe values in their lives, serve society, embrace innovation, and place the nation above all else.
During the programme, the Governor also released various publications of the University. He expressed special gratitude to Padma Shri Abhiraj Rajendra Mishra for donating approximately 10,000 rare books, journals and periodicals to the University. He said that preserving these rare works as the ‘Abhiraj Pustak Veethi’ would serve as a valuable repository of knowledge for future generations.
A special feature of the 12th Convocation was that the Governor delivered his address entirely in Sanskrit. Through Sanskrit, he conveyed to the students his message of knowledge, values and service to the nation.
