A seminar on the theme “Environment and AI for Amrit Kaal” was organised at Lok Bhavan, Dehradun, on Thursday. The central theme of the seminar was “Artificial Intelligence for a Sustainable Himalayan Future.” Experts shared their perspectives on environmental conservation, climate change, Himalayan ecology, and the responsible and effective use of artificial intelligence.
Addressing the seminar as the Chief Guest, Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) said that environmental degradation, ecological concerns and climate change are among the major challenges facing the world today. At such a time, there is a need to explore how one of the most significant technological achievements of the 21st century—Artificial Intelligence—can be integrated with nature. He said that challenges can also become opportunities if efforts are made to find innovative technological solutions to them.
The Governor said that there are several apprehensions in society regarding Artificial Intelligence. The need of the hour is to understand the technology and ensure that it is used responsibly for human welfare and the conservation of nature. He said that with the help of Artificial Intelligence, we can develop a better understanding of natural intelligence and the complex systems of nature.
He emphasised that nature has shown humanity the path towards life and prosperity. Development will be meaningful and sustainable only when technological advancement goes hand in hand with ecological balance. The Himalayas and their natural resources are invaluable, and therefore, it is essential to maintain harmony with nature while determining the course of development.
The Governor further said that the nature of global competition is changing rapidly and that fields such as Artificial Intelligence, advanced technology and manufacturing will play an increasingly important role in the future. He called upon the youth to move forward in the fields of innovation, technology and knowledge. Expressing confidence in India’s young generation, he said that through their talent, creativity and innovative spirit, India’s youth will establish a new identity for the country at the global level.
Padma Shri Dr. Anil Prakash Joshi, founder of HESCO, who was present at the seminar, highlighted the importance of nature and natural intelligence in his address. He said that technological development alone is not sufficient and that genuine and lasting prosperity can only be achieved by maintaining harmony with nature. He stressed that integrating Artificial Intelligence with natural intelligence is a pressing need of the present times.
President of the Indian National Science Academy and former Director General of the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Dr. Shekhar C. Mande, spoke about the fundamental concepts of Artificial Intelligence and its diverse applications. He explained how AI can prove beneficial in different aspects of human life and across various sectors.
Director General of the National Institute of Electronics and Information Technology, Dr. M. M. Tripathi, delivered an online presentation on expanding AI-based courses. He emphasised the need to equip young people and students with training in emerging technologies so that they can effectively participate in the rapidly evolving technological landscape.
Vice-Chancellor of Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technological University, Prof. Tripta Thakur, delivered the welcome address and outlined the objectives and thematic focus of the seminar. Dr. Subi Chaturvedi, Global Senior Vice President at InMobi, shared her views on the role and potential of Artificial Intelligence in the industry. Mr. Siddharth Madhav, Chief Technology Officer at Techno Hub, explained the concept and applications of an AI-based thematic classroom.
On the occasion, the Centre of Excellence for Artificial Intelligence in Mountain Systems—“Him AI” was also inaugurated at Veer Madho Singh Bhandari Uttarakhand Technological University. The centre will work on AI-based solutions, research and innovation, sustainable development and disaster resilience, keeping in view the unique requirements, environmental sensitivity and disaster-related challenges of the Himalayan region.
The seminar was attended by Prof. Durgesh Pant, Director General, UCOST; Mr. Ravinath Raman, Secretary to the Governor; Mr. Kaushal Kishore Shukla, Legal Advisor; Mrs. Reena Joshi, Additional Secretary; along with experts, educators and students associated with the fields of education, science, technology, industry and environment.
