Congratulates Garhwal Post on 30 Years of Journalism; Honours Outstanding Achievers

Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) said that the integration of education, science and artificial intelligence (AI) will shape the direction of future India. He said education is the foundation, science is the power of discovery and understanding, and AI will serve as a medium to accelerate knowledge and talent.
The Governor was addressing the Education Conclave and Garhwal Post Awards ceremony held at Lok Bhavan, Dehradun, on Saturday. He congratulated Garhwal Post Editor Satish Sharma and the entire team on completing 30 years. He said that over three decades, Garhwal Post has highlighted the formation, achievements, challenges and aspirations of Uttarakhand through its journalism.
On the occasion, the Governor honoured 30 individuals for their outstanding contributions in various fields, including social service, art, literature and education, as part of the newspaper’s 30th anniversary celebrations. Among those honoured was former Governor of Maharashtra and former Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Padma Bhushan Bhagat Singh Koshyari.
The Governor said that the media is an important medium of public dialogue in a democracy. In the digital and AI era, the importance of truth, facts, credibility and responsibility in journalism has increased further. He said that while the medium may change, the fundamental values of journalism must remain unchanged.
He said AI can be used to provide quality education, healthcare services and expert knowledge to people in remote areas. Young people must be encouraged to become not merely users of AI, but also creators, researchers and innovators.
On the occasion, a poetic adaptation of “Vatayan – The Life Journey of a Nationalist Sikh,” based on the Governor’s life, was also released. Describing it as a deeply personal moment, he congratulated the author, Ravindra Saini. He said his life journey has been one of national service, discipline, struggle and learning, and expressed hope that the work would inspire young people to move forward with determination, dedication and the spirit of putting the nation first.
Former Governor and Chief Minister Padma Bhushan Bhagat Singh Koshyari said that knowledge belongs neither only to the past, present nor future, but is an eternal and continuously flowing process. He said the future, too, will be built on the foundation of knowledge. He emphasised the need to promote reflection, contemplation and a culture of continuous learning in education.
Director of AIIMS Rishikesh, Dr. Meenu Singh, said digital technology has not only expanded access to education but has also created new opportunities for practical training. She said technology is providing students with better opportunities to learn and develop their skills.
Director General of UCOST, Prof. Durgesh Pant, said that in a geographically challenging state like Uttarakhand, digital technology is an effective means of expanding access to education. He stressed that merely acquiring information is not enough and that students must also be given hands-on experience.
D2L Managing Director Vivek Iyer said technology can remove barriers to learning, but it cannot replace teachers or the education system. He said technology can overcome geographical barriers and make quality education accessible to every student.
Garhwal Post founder Upendra Sharma, award recipients and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
