On the occasion of Kargil Vijay Diwas, Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) paid floral tributes to the brave martyrs of the Kargil War at the Shaurya Sthal in Chirbagh, Dehradun, on Sunday. The Governor also honoured the families of Kargil martyrs and Veer Naris (war widows), paying tribute to their indomitable courage, resilience, and invaluable contribution to the nation. Gallantry Award-winning soldiers and ex-servicemen who have rendered exemplary service to society and the nation were also felicitated.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that the brave soldiers of the Kargil War made the supreme sacrifice in defence of the motherland. He said that the sacrifice and dedication of these immortal heroes are a matter of immense pride for the entire nation and will always be remembered.
Addressing the Veer Naris and the families of the martyrs, the Governor said that their courage, patience, and inner strength continue to inspire society. He assured them that the entire nation, the Indian Army, and the military fraternity stand firmly by their side. He added that whenever they face any need or difficulty, every member of the armed forces family will be ready to support them.
The Governor said that Kargil Vijay Diwas is not merely a commemoration of a military victory but a symbol of India’s national identity, sovereignty, unwavering courage, and unshakeable self-confidence. He noted that the world has repeatedly witnessed how, whenever India’s unity and dignity have been challenged, Indian soldiers have defended the nation with extraordinary valour and the ultimate sacrifice.
He further said that the Kargil War was fought under extremely adverse conditions. Despite the formidable challenges of snow-clad high-altitude peaks, harsh weather, oxygen scarcity, and difficult terrain, Indian soldiers displayed exceptional bravery and emerged victorious. He described this achievement as a shining example of the Indian Army’s indomitable spirit, discipline, and unwavering commitment to the nation.
The Governor said that the sacrifice of the Kargil martyrs is not merely a chapter in history but an eternal flame that continues to illuminate the soul of the nation. He emphasized that every citizen has a responsibility to draw inspiration from their ideals, contribute to nation-building, and remain committed to the dignity and welfare of the families of the fallen heroes.
Among those present on the occasion were GOC Sub Area Major General M.P.S. Gill, senior officers of the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force, Junior Commissioned Officers (JCOs), soldiers from Dehradun Station, NCC cadets, school students, Veer Naris, mothers of martyrs, and ex-servicemen.
