Governor Participates in the Sixth ‘Lok Samvardhan Parv’
Describes Folk Art and Local Products as the Foundation of a Self-Reliant India

Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) participated in the sixth edition of the Lok Samvardhan Parv held at Parade Ground, Dehradun, on Wednesday. The festival, which will continue until July 17, has brought together artisans, handicraft makers, folk artists, and entrepreneurs from various states across the country to showcase their traditional arts, crafts, and local products. More than 150 stalls have been set up, with special emphasis on Uttarakhand’s traditional arts, handicrafts, and indigenous products.
The Governor visited various stalls and interacted with artisans and entrepreneurs, learning about their products, production methods, and marketing strategies. He also witnessed the cultural performances presented during the festival and felicitated winners of various competitions.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said that Lok Samvardhan Parv is not merely an event but a celebration of India’s cultural diversity, folk traditions, and creativity. He noted that India’s cultural heritage is exceptionally rich and diverse, with variations in language, folk songs, music, cuisine, and traditions evident every few miles, reflecting the country’s cultural strength.
He said the festival has provided an effective platform for artisans, artists, and entrepreneurs from across the nation to showcase their talent and excellence. Every participant’s skill, dedication, and innovation, he added, demonstrate that traditional arts and handicrafts are not only a part of India’s cultural heritage but can also serve as powerful means of livelihood and economic empowerment.
The Governor particularly praised the women of Uttarakhand and Self-Help Groups (SHGs), describing their efficiency, hard work, and self-reliance as an inspiration for the entire country. He said SHGs have played a significant role in giving local products national recognition and noted that he has personally witnessed their outstanding work.
Emphasizing the need to combine traditional skills with digitalization and modern marketing practices, the Governor said this would help local products access wider markets and increase artisans’ incomes. Expressing satisfaction, he noted that the festival had witnessed significant business through the large number of stalls, calling it an encouraging sign for the local economy.
He further said that India is steadily moving towards its goal of becoming a developed nation by 2047. In this context, he urged young people, artisans, and entrepreneurs to continuously work towards transforming their skills and passion into economic opportunities. He added that the country’s mindset is changing, with local products and indigenous enterprises receiving renewed recognition and appreciation.
Cabinet Minister Khajan Das, designated office-bearers Baljeet Soni, Dr. Surjeet Singh Gandhi, Shadab Shams, Puneet Mittal, Shyam Agrawal, Vishwas Dawar, Special Secretary, Minority Welfare Parag Madhukar Dhakate, Director Mrs. Deepti Singh, and other dignitaries were also present on the occasion.
