Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) attended the theatrical production “The Monk, The Warrior, The Legend”, dedicated to the late Mahavir Chakra awardee Colonel Sonam Wangchuk, at Modern School in New Delhi on Saturday. On the occasion, the Governor said that the performance was not merely a cultural event but a living tribute to the ideals of patriotism, sacrifice, courage, and leadership.
Sharing his personal experiences, the Governor said that he had worked closely with Colonel Sonam Wangchuk during his military career and that the Colonel’s fearless leadership, sound decision-making, and selfless dedication to the nation would continue to inspire generations. He remembered him as “a true hero, a Snow Warrior, and a proud son of Mother India.”
The Governor said that during Operation Vijay, Colonel Sonam Wangchuk led 40 soldiers of the Ladakh Scouts under extremely challenging conditions, displaying exceptional courage and leadership that would always be remembered.
He further said that Colonel Sonam Wangchuk’s simple personality and way of life reflected a unique blend of self-discipline, compassion, dedication to duty, and unwavering patriotism. He added that true leadership is established not by position but through character, courage, and sacrifice, and that Colonel Wangchuk’s life serves as a lasting source of inspiration for the younger generation.
Appreciating the efforts of the Ehsaas ’81 Foundation, the Governor remarked that a nation’s strength lies not only in securing its borders but also in the respect and gratitude it shows towards its heroes. A society that remembers and honors its heroes instills values of character, discipline, and patriotism in future generations.
Congratulating the Modern School family, the Governor said that a school is not merely a center of education but the first laboratory for building national character. He noted that it was especially meaningful that the life story of Colonel Sonam Wangchuk was being presented as an inspiration to the younger generation at the very institution where he had begun his journey as a student.
