Lok Bhavan Nainital 23 June, 2026
Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) attended the “Prakriti Ke Prahari” (Guardians of Nature) Forest Personnel Felicitation and Book Release Ceremony organized by the Uttarakhand Forest Department at Lok Bhavan, Nainital, on Tuesday as the Chief Guest. Addressing the gathering, he said that forests are not merely natural resources but are also custodians of our cultural heritage, ecological balance, and human civilization. He emphasized that nature and humanity are inseparably linked, and the vision of a developed India and a developed Uttarakhand can be achieved only when development and environmental conservation advance hand in hand.
The Governor felicitated forest personnel who have made outstanding contributions to forest and wildlife conservation. Describing them as true guardians of nature, he said that forest personnel work tirelessly to protect forests and wildlife, often risking their lives during severe forest fires, natural disasters, and other challenging situations. He noted that their dedication, courage, and spirit of service play a crucial role in preserving Uttarakhand’s rich green heritage.
On the occasion, the Governor released the books Rajaji Mein Poornima Ki Vah Raat, Common Birds of Almora and Nainital, From Roots to Riches, and Beehive Fencing. He said that these publications highlight various aspects of nature, biodiversity, livelihood enhancement, and innovation. Referring to Rajaji Mein Poornima Ki Vah Raat, he observed that the book beautifully portrays the emotional and spiritual bond between humans and nature, and would inspire readers to develop a deeper sense of awareness and affinity towards environmental conservation.
The Governor stated that forests have always been regarded as sacred in Indian culture. He noted that India’s Sanatan tradition is deeply rooted in forest culture and that the Vedas and Upanishads were composed in forest regions. He added that ancient scriptures describe trees as life-givers, and that the Matsya Purana equates the planting of one tree with having ten sons. This, he said, reflects a profound philosophy that underscores the importance of protecting nature.
Highlighting the global challenges posed by climate change and global warming, the Governor said that Uttarakhand’s role has become increasingly significant. He noted that nearly 71 percent of the state’s geographical area is under forest cover, reflecting its rich natural heritage. Uttarakhand’s forests, glaciers, and rivers sustain the lives of millions of people. Recalling the Chipko Movement, he said that Gaura Devi and her companions delivered an inspiring message of environmental conservation to the world, one that remains relevant even today.
The Governor emphasized that technology, innovation, and public participation are essential for addressing challenges such as forest fires and human-wildlife conflict. He appreciated initiatives such as Beehive Fencing, stating that they can effectively reduce human-wildlife conflict while simultaneously enhancing farmers’ incomes through beekeeping.
He further remarked that environmental conservation is not solely the responsibility of the Forest Department but a shared responsibility of every citizen. Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” campaign, he said that nature conservation must be transformed into a mass movement. He also stressed the need to instill in the younger generation a sense of love, responsibility, and respect for nature, water, and trees.
Earlier, Dr. Saket Badola, Director, Corbett Tiger Reserve, delivered the welcome address. Dr. Vivek Pandey, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife), also shared his views. A documentary on forest and wildlife conservation was screened during the programme.
Among those present on the occasion were Dr. Tejaswini Arvind Patil, Principal Chief Conservator of Forests (Kumaon), senior officers of the Forest Department, scientists, researchers, honoured forest personnel, and other distinguished guests.
