Lok Bhavan Nainital 17 June, 2026
Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) visited the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES) at Devasthal, Nainital, on Tuesday evening and addressed the institute’s scientists, researchers, and officials. On the occasion, the Governor stated that ARIES is a powerful symbol of modern India’s scientific capability, innovation, and self-reliance, and is playing a significant role in establishing the country’s global identity in the fields of space science and astronomical research.
The Governor said that Devasthal, situated amidst the Himalayan valleys of Uttarakhand, is not merely an observatory but an important center of scientific pursuit and knowledge creation. He noted that the curiosity and knowledge traditions through which India’s sages sought to understand the mysteries of the universe are being carried forward today by modern science through advanced technologies and research.
Describing the 3.6-meter Devasthal Optical Telescope (DOT) installed at the institute as a symbol of India’s scientific achievements and confidence, the Governor said that the synergy of Indian talent, modern technology, and global collaboration is enabling the country to achieve new milestones in space science. He also appreciated the research being undertaken by ARIES on star formation, supernovae, black holes, and other astronomical phenomena.
The Governor praised the dedication and contributions of the institute’s scientists, researchers, engineers, and staff, stating that their efforts and research are securing India a distinguished place on the global map of astronomical science. He emphasized that both science and national security are vital pillars in building a strong, capable, and self-reliant nation. He further remarked that today’s youth are not only engaged in scientific research but are also shaping the future direction of India.
The Governor observed that Artificial Intelligence (AI), data analytics, and digital technologies form the foundation of future science. He expressed satisfaction that ARIES is effectively utilizing modern technologies for the analysis of vast astronomical datasets. He described international scientific collaboration as an excellent example of the Indian philosophy of Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam—the world is one family.
The Governor stated that the Devasthal Observatory is also promoting immense opportunities for astro-tourism in Uttarakhand. This will not only increase public interest in science but also create new opportunities for employment and entrepreneurship among local youth. He urged the institute to provide students from remote mountainous regions and border villages with opportunities to visit the observatory from time to time, so that scientific temper and a spirit of innovation may be nurtured among them.
The Governor emphasized that science cannot remain confined to laboratories. It must reach every section of society so that logical thinking, scientific awareness, and a culture of innovation can flourish among the younger generation. He expressed confidence that ARIES, through its scientific excellence and research capabilities, will continue to make a significant contribution to the realization of a Developed India and a Developed Uttarakhand.
On this occasion, the Governor also felicitated five research scholars for their outstanding research work at the institute. The programme was attended by the institute’s Director, Dr. Manish Naja, senior scientists, research scholars, and other officials.
