Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) held separate meetings on Friday at Lok Bhavan with office bearers of the Hotel & Restaurant Association, Nainital and the Boat Association. During the meetings, the Governor discussed in detail the challenges related to tourist facilities and infrastructure development in Nainital and sought suggestions from the representatives.

The Governor stated that Nainital’s natural beauty and lake attract tourists from across India and abroad. He emphasized that collective efforts are required to enhance tourist facilities in the region. He noted that infrastructure must be developed in line with changing times and that the government is actively working in this direction. He also encouraged modernization and value addition in the tourism sector. Addressing the parking issue, he said that tunnel parking, multi-storey parking facilities, and ropeway projects could help resolve the problem, and efforts are already underway in this regard.

Representatives present at the meeting apprised the Governor of the challenges facing the tourism industry in Nainital. Their key suggestions included increasing the city’s parking capacity, strengthening traffic management, developing Defence Estate land in Nainital for parking purposes, approving reconstruction work for old hotels, introducing special train services for the Kumaon region, establishing a heliport in Nainital, and connecting the town with helicopter services.

Assuring appropriate action on all concerns, the Governor said that the suggestions would be discussed with the relevant departments, local administration, the Chief Secretary, and the Chief Minister for implementation. He added that work on some of the suggestions is already in progress. Hotel Association President Mr. Digvijay Singh Bisht and other office bearers were present at the meeting.

Earlier, the Governor also met with representatives of the Boat Association to discuss challenges related to boat operations on Naini Lake and sought their suggestions. He remarked that Naini Lake is a precious gift of nature and the primary attraction for tourists visiting Nainital. He noted that nearly every tourist visiting the town enjoys boating and stressed that the convenience and comfort of visitors should be given top priority.

Representatives of the Boat Association stated that boating is a major source of livelihood for many families. They suggested constructing shelters at the boat stands around Naini Lake to provide cover for tourists during the rainy season. They also recommended regular monitoring of lake cleanliness, beautification of the lake area, and repairs to surrounding roads. The representatives informed the Governor that approval has already been granted for the construction of ticket counters. The Governor assured them that efforts would be made to implement these suggestions.

Additional Secretary to the Governor Mrs. Reena Joshi, Hotel Association President Mr. Digvijay Singh Bisht, Boat Association President Mr. Ram Singh Bisht, and other office bearers were also present at the meetings.
