Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) met with Prof. Manish Naja, Director of the Aryabhatta Research Institute of Observational Sciences (ARIES), and Mr. Mohit Joshi, Registrar of the institute, at Lok Bhavan, Nainital, on Wednesday. During the meeting, detailed discussions were held on the institute’s various scientific, educational, and public awareness activities.
Appreciating the work being carried out by ARIES in the fields of science and research, the Governor emphasized the need for special outreach programs in the mountainous districts of Uttarakhand to promote awareness of science and technology. He suggested that ARIES should strengthen its engagement with schools, colleges, and local communities to foster scientific thinking and encourage young people to pursue careers in science and research.
During the meeting, the Governor also sought information about the scientific projects that ARIES plans to launch in the near future and discussed the institute’s future initiatives. He expressed confidence that ARIES would continue to play a significant role in advancing science, research, and innovation in the country and contribute to establishing Uttarakhand as a major hub for scientific activities.
On the occasion, ARIES Director Prof. Manish Naja briefed the Governor on the institute’s significant research work in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics, and atmospheric sciences. He particularly highlighted the state-of-the-art telescopes installed at the Devasthal Observatory campus, the scientific programs being conducted there, the available research facilities, and the achievements attained at both national and international levels.
Prof. Naja also informed the Governor about the Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) signed by ARIES with prestigious institutions such as Indian Space Research Organisation, Defence Research and Development Organisation, and Bharat Electronics Limited, as well as the scientific outcomes and collaborative research initiatives resulting from these partnerships.
