Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) attended the program “Ek Shaam Sainikon Ke Naam” (An Evening Dedicated to Soldiers), organized by the Department of Sainik Welfare at Lok Bhavan, Nainital on Monday. Sainik Welfare Minister Shri Ganesh Joshi was also present on the occasion. During the event, the Governor honoured gallantry award winners, distinguished ex-servicemen, and personnel from paramilitary forces by presenting them with certificates of appreciation.
In his address, the Governor said that “Ek Shaam Sainikon Ke Naam” is not merely a program, but a symbol of collective respect and gratitude dedicated to the courage, valour, sacrifice, and service of soldiers towards the nation. He stated that Uttarakhand is not only Devbhoomi (Land of Gods), but also Veerbhoomi (Land of Bravehearts), whose soldiers have always safeguarded the nation’s borders and enhanced its honour.
Referring to “Operation Sindoor,” the Governor said that the campaign is a strong example of the bravery, determination, and professional capability of the Indian Armed Forces. He noted that the Indian forces displayed exceptional courage, coordination, and strategic efficiency during the operation. He further said that the role of soldiers in protecting the nation’s security, sovereignty, and honour has always been inspirational, and the contribution of Uttarakhand’s brave soldiers has been significant in this regard.
The Governor highlighted Uttarakhand’s special contribution to India’s military tradition, noting that the state’s youth have played a remarkable role in the Army, paramilitary forces, and defence services. He said that the contribution of soldiers, ex-servicemen, war widows, and military families extends beyond border security, as they also serve as sources of inspiration for discipline, leadership, duty, and patriotism in society.
Describing soldiers and ex-servicemen not as “former” but as “extraordinary,” the Governor said that military life does not only create warriors for the battlefield, but also instills lifelong discipline, self-control, and dedication towards the nation. He emphasized the need to pass on the experiences, leadership qualities, and values of soldiers to the younger generation to provide new direction to nation-building.
The Governor also paid tribute to military families, especially mothers and widows of martyrs, saying that their contribution to the nation’s security and honour is equally important. He encouraged military families to move towards self-reliance and benefit from initiatives such as self-help groups.
