    Governor Reviews Quality of Higher Education, Research, and Innovation with Vice Chancellor and Faculty Deans of Kumaun University

    Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) chaired a review meeting on Saturday at the DSB Campus of Kumaun University with the Vice Chancellor and faculty deans of the university. The meeting focused on the quality of higher education, research, innovation, and skill development of students. The Governor stated that universities are not merely institutions for imparting education, but are important centers for nation-building, social development, and guiding the youth.

    The Governor emphasized that students are the central pillar of universities and that the role of teachers extends beyond imparting knowledge to preparing students for life. Appreciating the contribution of faculty members, he said that dedicated teachers form the foundation of quality education. He also highlighted the importance of alumni, describing them as a major strength of universities, and stressed the need to more effectively integrate their experience, support, and contributions into institutional development.

    During the meeting, the Governor appreciated the efforts being made by the university in academic reforms, research activities, digital systems, and infrastructure development. He said that greater momentum is needed in implementing the objectives of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, particularly in promoting multidisciplinary education, skill development, Indian knowledge systems, innovation, and research.

    The Governor stated that academic curricula should be contemporary, employment-oriented, and aligned with practical needs so that students are empowered not only with theoretical knowledge but also with leadership qualities, problem-solving abilities, innovation, and skill development. He laid special emphasis on promoting internships, experiential learning, startups, innovation, and entrepreneurship within universities.

    During the interaction, the Governor praised the academic achievements of Kumaun University’s Department of Geology and acknowledged the remarkable contributions made by its previous leadership, urging the institution to carry forward this tradition of excellence. He also appreciated the notable accomplishments of the Department of Chemistry, particularly its efforts related to aquatic life conservation in Nainital Lake and environmental awareness. He directed that the university’s inspiring success stories should be highlighted on a broader platform. The Governor also commended the activities and discipline-oriented contributions of the university’s Naval NCC unit.

    The Governor said that universities must emerge as institutions that actively connect youth with national interest, social responsibility, environmental conservation, and innovation, thereby contributing meaningfully to the vision of a Developed India by 2047.

    Vice Chancellor Prof. Diwan Singh Rawat presented information regarding the university’s innovations, academic activities, and other initiatives during the meeting. Campus Director Prof. Neeta Bora and deans from various faculties were also present on the occasion.
