Governor Inaugurates BEST Center at UPES, Emphasizes Skill Development and Environmental Responsibility

The Governor, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd), inaugurated the Bajaj Engineering Skills Training (BEST) Center at UPES University, Dehradun. He also unveiled the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Emissions Report issued by the University on the occasion. Appreciating the initiative by the university and Bajaj Auto Limited, the Governor stated that the center will play a vital role in equipping youth with industry-relevant skills and preparing them for employment.
The BEST Center is a practical, industry-aligned facility aimed at imparting advanced skills to diploma and B.Tech students in line with the rapidly evolving industrial landscape. The center focuses on areas such as mechatronics, robotics and automation, motion control and sensor technology, as well as Industry 5.0 and smart manufacturing. It is designed to enhance employability, bridge the gap between classroom learning and real-world applications, and prepare students as future-ready professionals.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor stated that the center will enable students to become proficient in manufacturing, automation, and modern engineering skills, making them industry-ready even before completing their degrees. He described it as a model initiative not only for Uttarakhand but for the entire country. He further added that the center will also benefit students from other engineering colleges and ITIs across the state.
The Governor appreciated Bajaj Auto Limited for installing state-of-the-art machinery in the first phase and expressed hope that the initiative would be expanded further. He emphasized that similar models should be replicated across other educational institutions in the country.
He also commended UPES for its Impact Assessment Report 2024–25 and the GHG Emissions Report, highlighting the importance of environmental conservation, climate responsibility, and ecological balance in the present era.
The Governor emphasized that skill development in emerging fields such as Artificial Intelligence, quantum computing, automation, and electric vehicles is crucial in the 21st century. He urged industry stakeholders to actively support training in these areas to prepare youth for future challenges.
Vice Chancellor of UPES, Dr. Sunil Rai, stated that as a “University for Tomorrow,” the institution integrates measurable impact across all its dimensions. Chief Human Resources Officer of Bajaj Auto Limited, Ravi Kiran Ramasamy, also addressed the gathering, sharing insights on skill development, employability, and evolving industry expectations from engineering graduates. The event concluded with a vote of thanks by UPES President Dr. Ram Sharma.
The program was attended by HERS Chairman Dr. Sharad Mehra, Registrar UPES Manish Madan, Center Head Dr. Sachin Sharma, along with other distinguished guests, faculty members, and staff.
