Subject experts shared important insights on prevention and preparedness for high altitude sickness and other critical aspects of safe travel.

Addressing the seminar, the Governor, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd), stated that the safety, health, and well-being of lakhs of pilgrims undertaking the Char Dham Yatra must be the highest priority. He described the seminar as an important initiative aimed at safeguarding human life while respecting faith, and congratulated the university for organizing the event.

The Governor emphasized that “faith with caution” should be the guiding principle of the Char Dham Yatra. He urged pilgrims to undergo proper health check-ups before undertaking the journey, especially elderly individuals who should travel only after medical consultation. He also highlighted that while Uttarakhand’s mountainous routes are scenic, they are equally sensitive and prone to risks, necessitating increased awareness among travelers.

Highlighting the importance of the “Golden Hour” in road accidents, the Governor stated that timely medical assistance can save numerous lives. He called for strengthening emergency medical systems and placing special focus on trauma care.

Renowned cardiologist Padma Shri Prof. (Dr.) S.C. Manchanda shared key precautions for travelers in high-altitude regions. He advised pre-travel health check-ups, gradual ascent to higher altitudes, and allowing the body time to acclimatize by staying at moderate altitudes for 1–2 days. He also emphasized the importance of yoga and meditation for mental well-being.

He further advised regular health monitoring during the journey, including checking oxygen levels and blood pressure, adhering to prescribed medications, and immediately seeking medical assistance in case of warning symptoms.

Dr. Pankaj from Medical College Haldwani highlighted preventive measures for road accidents in mountainous regions, stressing safe driving practices and awareness of geographical challenges. He also explained the importance of first aid, noting that timely and correct intervention can save lives in critical situations.

Dr. Ashutosh Tiwari, Head of Orthopedics at AIIMS Gorakhpur, elaborated on neurological issues arising in high-altitude conditions. He explained the impact of low oxygen levels and extreme cold on the brain and nervous system, and emphasized early identification and timely medical management.

On this occasion, a “Pilgrimage Education Handbook” for safe Char Dham Yatra was also released, providing detailed guidelines and precautions for pilgrims.
