The Governor, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd), on Tuesday launched the “100-Day Intensive TB Eradication Campaign” at Lok Bhavan on the occasion of World TB Day, organized by the National Health Mission, Uttarakhand. As part of the campaign, he also flagged off a mobile van aimed at strengthening outreach and awareness.
On this occasion, the Governor honored Nikshay Mitras who have adopted TB patients and are providing regular monitoring and emotional support. He also felicitated the districts of Dehradun, Udham Singh Nagar, and Pithoragarh for their outstanding work in TB eradication. In addition, individuals who have successfully recovered from TB, referred to as “TB Champions,” were also recognized.
Calling for the “TB-Free India” campaign to be transformed into a mass movement, the Governor stated that eradication of TB cannot be achieved through government efforts alone; it requires active public participation and collective commitment. He highlighted that individuals who have recovered from TB are true warriors and can serve as a source of inspiration for society. He appreciated the efforts of healthcare workers, voluntary organizations, and all stakeholders involved, noting that Uttarakhand is among the leading states due to their dedication.
Emphasizing the importance of the 100-day campaign period, the Governor stated that clear targets must be set and accountability ensured. He remarked that “every day matters” and that small, consistent efforts lead to significant outcomes. He also identified lack of awareness as a major challenge and urged people to overcome hesitation and misconceptions regarding the disease. He called upon every citizen to actively participate and take leadership at their level.
On this occasion, Health Minister Subodh Uniyal stated that even today, many people are severely affected by TB due to economic constraints. He emphasized that the primary objective of the “TB-Free India” campaign is to ensure that no individual suffers from TB due to financial limitations in the 21st century.
