Dr. S. M. Wilson, Chief Executive Officer, Blackfoot Challenge (State of Montana, USA), paid a courtesy call on the Governor, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd), at Lok Bhavan on Monday.
During the meeting, Dr. Wilson shared insights from his 20 years of study and experience on the subject of human–bear conflict. He noted that research indicates bears are often attracted to the remains of dead livestock, which leads them into human settlements. In such cases, the scientific and safe disposal of animal carcasses is essential to reduce the likelihood of bears entering populated areas. He also highlighted that climate change is influencing bear behaviour, with reduced hibernation periods resulting in longer active durations and increased movement toward human habitations in search of food.
Dr. Wilson suggested that detailed research on bear diet, habitat patterns, and behavioural movements is necessary to effectively mitigate human–bear conflict. He emphasised that community participation, co-creation of scientific data, preventive strategies, proper carcass management, public awareness, and effective management planning can play a vital role in addressing this challenge.
The Governor appreciated Dr. Wilson’s valuable experience and observations, and stated that maintaining human–wildlife balance is of critical importance in a mountainous state like Uttarakhand. He emphasised that scientific approaches, community involvement, and coordinated efforts are essential to ensure harmonious coexistence between humans and wildlife. He also requested Dr. Wilson to share his recommendations with the Forest Minister and the concerned Secretary. Former PCCF Shri Rajiv Bhartari was also present on the occasion.
