The Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.), on Wednesday participated as the Chief Guest in the “Bicentenary Celebration of Hindi Journalism”, organized by the Press Club, Haridwar, in Haridwar. On this occasion, he shared his views on the historical, social, and democratic contributions of Hindi journalism.

The Governor stated that the uninterrupted journey of Hindi journalism for over 200 years reflects its depth, commitment, and dedication. Referring to the publication of Udant Martand as the beginning of Hindi journalism, he described it as a powerful medium for awakening national consciousness. He emphasized that Hindi is not merely a language of communication but an expression of India’s emotions, culture, and soul.

The Governor remarked that Hindi journalism, guided by truth, wisdom, and values, questions authority while keeping public interest at its core, which is the true essence of democracy. He said that independence was not merely a transfer of power, but a commitment to civilizational renaissance and the creation of a new India, in which Hindi journalism has played a vital role.

Highlighting the challenges of the digital era, the Governor said that while the form of media is rapidly changing, the fundamental duty of journalism must remain unchanged. He added that Hindi journalism has never been limited to reporting events alone; rather, it has consistently amplified the voices of the marginalized, upheld women’s dignity, and led social reform movements.

Referring to the spiritual significance of Haridwar, the Governor said that the city is not just a pilgrimage site but a center of India’s consciousness. Citing that crores of tourists visited Haridwar in 2025, he emphasized that journalists carry the responsibility of conveying positive, nation-building messages to millions through their writings. He also urged the media to take the lead in generating public awareness regarding cleanliness in the city.

The Governor called upon journalists to adopt public interest, democratic values, and national reconstruction as a collective resolve, and to play their role in making India a developed, self-reliant, and global leader by 2047.

As the keynote speaker, Shri Nirmal Pathak shared his insights on the topic “Hindi Journalism in Nation Rebuilding after Independence.”

The programme was attended by President of Press Club Haridwar Shri Dharmendra Chaudhary, Chief Convenor Shri Sunil Pandey, Convenor Shri Sanjay Arya, Convenor Dr. Pradeep Joshi, Treasurer Shri Kashiram Saini, Cultural Secretary Shri Ashu Sharma, General Secretary Shri Deepak Mishra, members of the organizing committee, and several distinguished guests.
