His Excellency the Governor, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.), was paid a courtesy call today at Lok Bhavan by Professor and Dean (Academics), IIT Roorkee, Dr. Naveen K. Nawani, along with Visiting Professor Dr. H. C. Pokhariyal.

During the interaction, the dignitaries apprised the Governor of several key research initiatives being undertaken at IIT Roorkee that have a direct bearing on public welfare. These research efforts aim to promote improved nutrition, food safety, enhancement of farmers’ income, advancement in animal husbandry practices, and reduction in the unnecessary use of antibiotics. Dr. Nawani informed that probiotic-enriched millet bread developed from coarse grains is highly beneficial for health and, owing to its low glycaemic index, is also suitable for diabetic patients.

The delegation also shared details about an indigenous beverage prepared from Buransh flowers, named ‘Rhodoboost’, which helps improve gut health, enhances immunity, and aids in preventing food-borne diseases. Highlighting research on Uttarakhand’s indigenous Lakhori chilli, they stated that it contains natural antimicrobial and antioxidant properties, thereby establishing its medicinal and nutritional significance. Additionally, research related to the identification of honey purity and adulteration was discussed, which will assist in ensuring food safety and providing consumers with pure honey.

Appreciating these research initiatives, the Governor remarked that such practical and people-centric research is of immense importance to society, agriculture, and the healthcare sector. He emphasized the need to promote research based on honey, millets, Badri Tulsi, traditional crops of Uttarakhand, local products, and the State’s natural resources.

The Governor expressed confidence that the efforts being made by a prestigious institution like IIT Roorkee would provide a strong foundation for the State’s and the nation’s overall development, nutritional security, and sustainable livelihoods in the years to come.
