15-10-2025 : Doon University VC Prof. Surekha Dangwal and Prof. Thomas Schwab paid a courtesy call on the Governor at Raj Bhawan.
Doon University has initiated the appointment of “Professors of Practice” in accordance with the guidelines issued by the University Grants Commission (UGC). As part of this initiative, Doon University has appointed Prof. Thomas Schwab, Senior Principal Scientist at BASF Germany, as a “Professor of Practice.” On Wednesday, Prof. Schwab, accompanied by Vice-Chancellor Prof. Surekha Dangwal, called on Governor Lt. Gen. Gurmit Singh (Retd.) at Raj Bhawan.
Prof. Thomas Schwab is also an Honorary Professor at the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) — one of the world’s oldest and most prestigious universities, established nearly 700 years ago. BASF Germany is a 150-year-old leading global chemical company, with over 10,000 scientists engaged in research and innovation.
The Governor said that this initiative, in line with UGC guidelines, reflects Doon University’s commitment to academic excellence and innovation. He remarked that eminent experts who have made outstanding contributions in their respective fields truly embody the spirit of a “Professor of Best Practice.” The Governor also discussed ongoing industrial research at BASF Germany with Dr. Schwab and appreciated his scientific contributions.
He emphasized that other universities should also take similar initiatives to engage distinguished professionals and experts from industry and research sectors as “Professors of Practice,” without compromising on quality or standards. Such collaborations, he said, will bridge the gap between academia and industry, fostering meaningful synergy.
Vice-Chancellor Prof. Surekha Dangwal informed that following the Governor’s suggestions, Doon University has appointed Dr. Schwab as a “Professor of Practice” on an honorary basis, ensuring no financial burden on the university. She also mentioned that Dr. Schwab has personally borne all expenses related to his international travel.
Dean of the School of Physical Sciences and Director of the Research & Development Cell, Dr. Arun Kumar, shared that Dr. Schwab is actively working with the university’s students and faculty members, contributing significantly to enhancing the quality of scientific research.
Also present on the occasion were Dr. Himani Sharma, Dr. Asha Ram Gairola, Dr. Vikas Sharma, and Dr. Charu Dwivedi.
