Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) today attended the grand Passing Out Parade of the 7th batch of Agniveers of the Assam Regiment as the Chief Guest at the Assam Regimental Centre in Shillong. On this occasion, the Governor addressed the newly trained Agniveers and extended his best wishes for a bright military career, inspiring them towards national service, discipline, dedication, and military values.
The Governor stated that today is not merely a formal military achievement but the beginning of a new chapter in service to the nation. He said that the Agniveers of the 7th batch of the Assam Regiment have demonstrated through their training, discipline, and determination that India’s borders are in safe hands. Addressing the Agniveers, he emphasized that they now have no regional or personal identity; their only identity is that of an “Indian Soldier,” their only religion is “National Duty,” and their only caste is “Indian.”
Referring to his close association with the Assam Regiment, the Governor said that he himself served as a soldier of this prestigious regiment and that being present here today feels like a “homecoming” to his parent regiment. He noted that the Assam Regiment not only trained him as a soldier but also shaped his personality through rigorous discipline, excellent traditions, and values of service to the nation.
He said that the history of the Assam Regiment is a symbol of unparalleled bravery, sacrifice, and patriotism. Whenever the nation faced a crisis, the regiment’s brave soldiers displayed extraordinary courage and valor, thwarting the enemy’s intentions. The Governor called upon the Agniveers to carry forward this glorious legacy and always place national interest above all else.
The Governor further stated that the military landscape is changing rapidly and that future wars will be won not only through conventional weapons but also through technological superiority and strategic capability. He urged the Agniveers to become proficient in cyber security, drone technology, artificial intelligence, and modern military technologies. He said that in the coming years, the most effective armed forces will be those that achieve the best integration of technological capability and human excellence.
The Governor noted that under the leadership of the Prime Minister, India’s armed forces have undergone rapid modernization and that self-reliance in the defence sector has gained new strength. Indigenous military systems are a symbol of India’s growing strategic power and confidence. He described the Agniveers as India’s modern, confident, and technology-enabled “new-age warriors” on whom the nation’s future security depends.
On this occasion, the Governor also paid tribute to the parents and guardians of the Agniveers, stating that they are truly blessed for dedicating their sons to the service of the nation. He added that such families are the real strength of the country.
