Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi today virtually launched the National HPV Vaccination Programme for the prevention of cervical cancer from Ajmer, Rajasthan. This vaccination initiative reflects the Government of India’s commitment to women’s health, adolescent welfare, and strengthening healthcare services. In this connection, Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) formally launched the programme at Gandhi Shatabdi Hospital, Dehradun, marking the commencement of the campaign across the state.
On the occasion, the Governor expressed gratitude to the Hon’ble Prime Minister and described the initiative as a sensitive and visionary step towards safeguarding the health of the nation’s daughters. He said that daughters represent the future of the nation and that a healthy woman forms the foundation of a strong family and society. He emphasised that the HPV vaccination programme is not merely a campaign but a strong commitment to women’s health security and will play a crucial role in preventing serious diseases such as cervical cancer.
He further stated that the large-scale vaccination mission launched by the Government of India is a significant step towards women’s empowerment and expressed confidence that the initiative will bring positive transformation in women’s healthcare in the coming years. The Governor called upon Ayushman Arogya Mandirs, Primary Health Centres, and Community Health Centres to ensure active participation in the campaign.
In the first phase, 155 HPV vaccination centres have been identified across the state, all located in government health institutions. At these centres, eligible adolescent girls aged 14 years will be administered the HPV vaccine based on scientific evidence to ensure maximum protection prior to infection.
Under this programme, the quadrivalent HPV vaccine (Gardasil) is being administered, which provides protection against four high-risk types of the HPV virus. This is the same vaccine that costs approximately ₹4,000 per dose in the private sector, but is being provided completely free of cost at government health facilities. Adequate vaccine availability has been ensured, and training of doctors, nurses, and frontline health workers has been completed for effective implementation.
Health Minister Dr. Dhan Singh Rawat, Member of Parliament Naresh Bansal, MLA Khajan Das, Secretary Health Sachin Kurve, Mission Director Manoj Goyal, senior officials of the Health Department, district administration, medical colleges, and representatives of partner institutions were present on the occasion.
