This Republic Day was special for 175 prisoners in different jails. Taking a humane stand, Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd) has given assent to the proposal for the premature release of 175 prisoners serving long sentences in various jails of the state on Republic Day. Since the formation of the state, this is the first time in the history of Uttarakhand that the Governor has given permission for the premature release of 175 prisoners simultaneously on the basis of mercy. One of the prisoners to be released prematurely was serving a sentence in the prison for more than 47 years. 7 other prisoners were serving sentences in different prisons for more than 40 years. Of these, 26 prisoners were serving sentences of more than 30 years. Premature release of 9 women prisoners has also been given. 27 prisoners from Sampurnanand Camp, Sitarganj, Central Jail, 52 from Udham SinghNagar, 63 from District Jail Haridwar, 01 from District Jail Pauri, 01 from District Jail Chamoli, 02 from Central Jail Bareilly, Uttar Pradesh, 01 from Central Jail Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, 01 prisoner from Central Jail, Fatehgarh, Uttar Pradesh and 23 other prisoners have been allowed to be released prematurely by the Governor on the basis of mercy and on the basis of their good conduct.
