Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) attended the “Divya Kala Mela” as Chief Guest at Rangers Ground, Dehradun today. The fair was organised by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, and featured products and artworks created by persons with disabilities from across the country.
The Governor visited various stalls, interacted with participants, and appreciated their products and innovations. On the occasion, he also distributed concessional loan cheques to beneficiaries under different government schemes.
Addressing the gathering, the Governor said that every product, artwork and presentation displayed at the fair proves that disability is not a limitation but a symbol of determination, resilience and creativity. He noted that the exhibits at the fair reflect the creativity, productivity and self-confidence of persons with disabilities and serve as a source of inspiration.
He emphasised that inclusive development is meaningful only when no section of society is left behind. Persons with disabilities deserve not sympathy, but dignity, opportunity and equal participation. Their active role in nation-building is extremely important. He said that when provided with the right platform and resources, persons with disabilities are capable of guiding society and the nation towards new directions through their talent and innovation. He added that there has been a positive change in societal attitudes, and persons with disabilities are achieving remarkable success in various fields.
The Governor highlighted that modern technology and artificial intelligence are opening new avenues for persons with disabilities, enabling them to utilise their abilities more effectively and contribute significantly in the fields of creativity, innovation and production.
He further stated that the fair reflects the spirit of “Local for Vocal.” The products showcased represent inspiring stories of hard work, dedication and confidence. By promoting and purchasing these products, citizens not only encourage local entrepreneurs but also strengthen the resolve of building a self-reliant India. He appealed to the public to actively support the enterprises and products created by persons with disabilities and contribute to building an inclusive society.
Union Minister of State Shri B.L. Verma, who was present on the occasion, described the event as a celebration of human potential. He said the fair symbolises empowerment, self-reliance and dignity, and provides a strong platform for artists and entrepreneurs with disabilities from across the country to showcase their talent.
The Minister added that under the leadership of the Prime Minister, several initiatives such as the Accessible India Campaign, disability pension schemes, special educational institutions and skill development programmes are being implemented effectively to empower persons with disabilities.
Member of Parliament Mala Rajya Lakshmi Shah, MLA Shri Khajan Das, Chairman and Managing Director of the National Handicapped Finance and Development Corporation Shri Anil Kumar, Chief General Manager Dr. Vineet Rana, Assistant General Manager Shri Shankar Sharma, Secretary, Social Welfare Department Shri Sridhar Babu Addanki, Additional Secretary Shri Prakash Chandra, Commissioner for Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities S. Govind Raj, Director Pradeep A., and other dignitaries were present on the occasion.
