Senior Citizens Should Live This Phase of Life with New Energy and Happiness: Governor
Caring for the mind and brain, along with the body, is equally important; make time for hobbies and passions
Lok Bhavan Dehradun 21 August, 2026
Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) said that life does not come to a halt after the age of 60. Rather, it is an opportunity to rediscover oneself, devote time to personal interests, and experience the joys of life. He said senior citizens can strengthen society by guiding it through their experience and knowledge while also connecting with the energy and enthusiasm of the younger generation.
The Governor was addressing an event organized by Travi Club 60 at a hotel on Rajpur Road on Friday to mark Senior Citizens Day. Expressing his gratitude to Travi Club for organizing the event, he said such gatherings help senior citizens remain socially active and provide them an opportunity to come together and enjoy life.
The Governor said that with families becoming smaller and lifestyles changing, social interaction and communication have become more important than ever for senior citizens. He emphasized that happiness does not necessarily come from major achievements, but from our thoughts and outlook towards life.
He said that along with taking care of the body, it is equally important to care for the mind, brain, and heart. At this stage of life, people should make time for introspection and self-dialogue. He stressed that slowing down should not mean becoming inactive, and senior citizens should continue to remain active according to their abilities.
Calling upon senior citizens to devote time once again to their hobbies and passions, he said every individual has some hidden talent. Learning a new language, music, art, or a new skill should not be viewed as a competition, but as an opportunity to find personal happiness and fulfilment.
The Governor urged everyone to “try to live in the present moment.” Rather than worrying about the past or being uncertain about the future, people should make the most of the present. He said senior citizens possess a wealth of life experience and can make a valuable contribution to society and the younger generation by sharing their knowledge and experiences.
First Lady Mrs. Gurmit Kaur, Travi Club Director Abhishek Sharma, club members, and a large number of senior citizens were present on the occasion.
