Lok Bhavan Nainital 21 June, 2026
On the occasion of International Yoga Day, Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh participated in a mass yoga practice session organized at Lok Bhavan on Sunday and extended his greetings and best wishes to the people of the state and all yoga practitioners associated with yoga across India and around the world.
Speaking on the occasion, the Governor said that International Yoga Day is a grand celebration of the global rise of India’s Sanatan culture, the tradition of sages, and spiritual consciousness. He stated that today the entire world bows in reverence to India’s invaluable knowledge tradition, which has provided humanity with the timeless path of health, balance, peace, and self-realization.
The Governor said that yoga is the soul of India, the essence of our culture, and the eternal consciousness of Sanatan civilization. It has guided individuals toward self-awareness, fostered harmony in society, and conveyed to the world the message of “Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam” (the world is one family). He added that yoga serves as a bridge connecting the body, mind, intellect, soul, and the Divine. It is not merely a spiritual practice but an eternal science of living a balanced, noble, and meaningful life.
The Governor further said that the Himalayan region has been a sacred land of yoga, meditation, and spiritual practice since ancient times. The wisdom that originated here has shown humanity the path to self-improvement and a blissful life through yoga. He noted that the Ganga, the Himalayas, and the state’s sacred pilgrimage sites continue to symbolize the living traditions of self-discipline, self-development, and global welfare.
Referring to the visionary initiative of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Governor said that yoga has now become a global people’s movement. The recognition of International Yoga Day by the United Nations is a historic acknowledgment of India’s cultural strength and spiritual heritage. He remarked that yoga is one of India’s most influential forms of soft power, touching the hearts of people across the world.
The Governor emphasized that yoga teaches harmony and coexistence with nature. It inspires a disciplined lifestyle and balanced consumption while creating awareness about our responsibility toward conservation and environmental sustainability. He said that yoga is the practical expression of the ideal “Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah, Sarve Santu Niramayah” (“May all be happy, may all be free from illness”) and paves the way for health, harmony, and peace for all humanity.
He further stated that transforming yoga into a means of progress—from the individual to the family, from the family to society, from society to the nation, and from the nation to global welfare—is the message of India’s Sanatan culture and a collective commitment toward a developed India. He called upon everyone to make yoga a part of their daily values, a family tradition, and a foundation for nation-building.
During the program, students of the Yoga Department of Kumaun University presented yoga demonstrations and synchronized yoga performances. The event was attended by Governor’s Aide Amit Srivastava, Sumit Kumar Shadija, Joint Director of Information Dr. Nitin Upadhyay, Comptroller Pramod Chamoli, along with officers and employees of Lok Bhavan.
