The first meeting of the Board of Management of Uttarakhand Sports University was held at Lok Bhavan under the chairmanship of Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.).
During the meeting, Vice-Chancellor Shri Amit Kumar Sinha gave a detailed presentation on the establishment of the University, its academic plans, administrative structure, human resources, proposed courses and infrastructure development. After deliberations regarding the creation of teaching and administrative posts, it was decided that a well-justified proposal would be submitted to the State Government for consideration.
The Vice-Chancellor informed that the University was conceptualised in 2022, its Act was passed in March 2025, and it received the Governor’s assent on May 5, 2025. The University headquarters has been established at Gaulapar, Haldwani, and is being developed in alignment with the goal of “Mission Olympic 2036.”
The Governor stated that the Sports University should not merely function as a degree-awarding institution but must evolve into a strong centre for building an excellent sports culture. He observed that Uttarakhand has no shortage of sporting talent; what is required is proper training, modern resources and appropriate guidance.
He emphasised that the University’s action plan should pave the way for taking youth “from village to Olympics.” He noted that many talented athletes from rural areas need to be identified and provided with systematic training and opportunities so they can excel at national and international levels. He further stressed the need to lay a strong foundation for sports culture in the State, fostering interest and competitive spirit among the youth.
The Governor directed the University to sign Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with other sports universities and sports organisations across the country to facilitate the exchange of training, research, technology and expertise. He also suggested identifying villages that have produced distinguished athletes and developing them as specialised sports talent development centres.
Highlighting the importance of effective governance, the Governor underlined the necessity of ensuring autonomy for the Vice-Chancellor to enable independent decision-making without external influence. He emphasised that transparency and accountability must be maintained.
Registrar Dr. Ashish Chauhan, Additional Secretaries Shri Manuj Goyal and Shri Navneet Pandey, along with other members, were present at the meeting.
