Hon’ble Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) was called on by Chief Development Officer, Nainital Arvind Kumar Pandey at Lok Bhawan on Tuesday. During the meeting, the Governor reviewed ongoing development works, innovative initiatives, and tourism-related activities being undertaken in the district.
The Chief Development Officer informed the Governor that the lakes of Nainital are the region’s primary identity and that special efforts are being undertaken for their beautification and cleanliness. He stated that market linkages have been established with local hotel businesses to provide marketing support for products prepared by women associated with Self-Help Groups.
He further informed that various training programmes are being conducted to promote self-employment and skill development among youth. Along with encouraging homestay development in the district, action is also being taken against homestays operating in violation of prescribed norms.
The Governor directed officials to develop new tourist destinations in Nainital and promote various activities that would encourage tourists to stay longer and remain engaged. He also emphasized the need for better packaging, branding, and digital marketing of products prepared by women associated with Self-Help Groups so that local products can gain access to wider markets.
During the meeting, the Governor also reviewed forest department activities with Divisional Forest Officer Nainital Akash Gangwar, particularly regarding forest fire incidents and preventive measures being undertaken.
The Divisional Forest Officer informed the Governor that human-wildlife conflict remains one of the major challenges in the district. To address this issue, solar fencing and other protective measures are being provided in affected areas. He further stated that a pine needle collection campaign is being conducted for forest fire prevention, under which local residents are being given an incentive of ₹10 per kilogram for collecting pine needles.
He also informed that special efforts are being made to promote eco-tourism in the district.
The Governor appreciated the efforts being undertaken for forest fire prevention through pine needle management in the district. He stressed the need to increase public awareness regarding forest fire control and reducing incidents of human-wildlife conflict. He also emphasized promoting environmental conservation and greater local participation in forest areas.
