Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) on Saturday addressed the Jagran Forum programme organised by the Dainik Jagran Group in Dehradun on the theme “Uttarakhand: Land of the Brave.” He stated that Uttarakhand is not only Devbhoomi but also Veerbhoomi. The land of this state has consistently produced courageous, disciplined and dedicated soldiers who have made the supreme sacrifice for the security and unity of the nation.
The Governor said that Uttarakhand has a glorious military history. From the First World War to the present day, brave sons of the state have displayed exceptional valour and courage. He noted with pride that Major Somnath Sharma of Uttarakhand was awarded independent India’s first Param Vir Chakra, and that many soldiers from the state have also been honoured with the Maha Vir Chakra and other gallantry awards.
Referring to regiments such as the Garhwal Rifles and the Kumaon Regiment, the Governor said these units symbolize the finest traditions of discipline, bravery and patriotism, and have played a crucial role in safeguarding the nation’s borders. He also mentioned that the under-construction Sainik Dham in the state is an important initiative to honour Uttarakhand’s military heritage and will serve as an inspiration for future generations.
The Governor stated that the goal has been set to make India a developed, self-reliant nation and a global leader by the year 2047, and Uttarakhand will play a significant role in achieving this vision. He said that active participation of soldiers and ex-servicemen in the holistic development of border and rural areas can bring about positive transformation.
Appreciating the contribution of women and self-help groups in Uttarakhand, the Governor said that the state has made remarkable progress in sectors such as honey, aroma products, millets, homestays and tourism, which offer immense potential for employment generation and income enhancement. Expressing concern over rising substance abuse and corruption, he said that corruption severely damages the economy and social values. He urged the media to run awareness campaigns to strengthen the spirit of “Nation First” and unity in society.
The Governor emphasized that soldiers and ex-servicemen, owing to their discipline, leadership qualities and sense of duty, can make a significant contribution to nation-building. He appealed to ex-servicemen to visit schools and colleges to play an active role in shaping the character and instilling patriotism among the youth. He stated that such intellectual platforms help guide society in the right direction and expressed hope that the deliberations would provide new momentum to the overall development of Uttarakhand.
Senior officials of the Dainik Jagran Group, editorial representatives, eminent citizens from various fields and other distinguished guests were present at the programme.
