Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) participated in a programme organized by Gaurav Bharti Shiksha Sansthan at Lok Bhavan on Friday and planted a sapling. The programme was organized to mark the significant milestone of the institution completing the plantation of 1.25 lakh (125,000) saplings since 2011.

The Governor appreciated Gaurav Bharti Shiksha Sansthan for planting 1.25 lakh saplings over the past 15 years, describing the achievement as commendable. He said that the campaign is an excellent example not only of environmental conservation but also of social participation and public awareness. Appreciating the institution’s plantation drive, he emphasized that the active participation of every section of society is essential for environmental protection. He also stressed that, along with plantation, special attention should be given to the protection and nurturing of the planted trees.

S.P. Singh, President of the institution, said that the plantations are not limited to the institutional premises but have also been carried out in villages and settlements across the Doon Valley, schools, along roadsides, at temples, and in household courtyards. On the occasion, the institution suggested declaring Tabebuia as Dehradun’s “Memory Tree” and adopting it as the designated species for commemorative plantation.

Those present on the occasion included S.P. Singh, Chairman of Gaurav Bharti Shiksha Sansthan; Zorawar Singh, Manager, SBS University; Alok Ulfat, teacher, theatre artist and cultural activist; P.K. Mehrishi, former hockey coach and environmentalist; and Jaswinder Singh Sudan, Chartered Accountant, among others.
