Governor Lt. General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) participates in International Conference on Cyber Security and Digital Forensics at UPES.

The Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.), on Friday participated in the International Conference on Advancement in Cyber Security and Digital Forensics (ICACSDF-2026) organised at UPES University.

Organised by the School of Computer Science, UPES, the international conference brought together researchers, cyber security experts, industry professionals and students from India and abroad. The conference deliberated upon issues relating to cybercrime, emerging cyber threats and digital security.

Addressing the gathering, the Governor said that digital technology has become an integral part of almost every sphere of our lives. From banking, education, healthcare, communication and governance to industry, energy, transportation and critical infrastructure, our dependence on digital systems is increasing continuously. “Digital India is our strength, but a Secure Digital India is our necessity,” he said.

Congratulating UPES and all the organisers for convening the conference, the Governor said that cyber security is directly linked to the country’s technological progress, economic security, citizens’ trust and national security. He emphasised that cyber security capabilities must grow at the same pace as technology. He said that public trust in digital systems can be sustained only when citizens have confidence in the security of their data, identity, hard-earned money and the country’s critical systems.

Describing digital forensics as an important pillar of cyber security, the Governor said that as the nature of crime evolves, investigative methodologies must also evolve. Critical evidence is increasingly available in mobile phones, computers, servers, networks and other digital platforms. The identification, preservation and scientific analysis of such digital evidence have therefore become extremely important for the justice system and law-enforcement agencies.

The Governor emphasised that universities and research institutions must take the lead in developing innovative solutions in the field of cyber security. Through education, research and innovation, India must build the capability to stay one step ahead of emerging cyber threats. He said that self-reliance in cyber security means developing our own technologies, experts, solutions and security capabilities. This, he added, would require coordinated efforts by the government, universities, industry, security agencies and society.

The Governor expressed confidence that ICACSDF-2026 would go beyond being merely a conference and evolve into a platform for new ideas, research, collaboration and innovation, giving a new direction to India’s digital security efforts.
