Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.), met Director General of Police, Shri Deepam Seth, at Lok Bhavan on Friday for a courtesy meeting. Discussions focused on several important issues, including the law and order situation in the state, internal security, the drug de-addiction campaign, cyber security, police welfare and modernisation, and preparations for the forthcoming Kumbh Mela.
The Governor directed that the “Drug-Free Devbhoomi” campaign be strengthened through a comprehensive, coordinated and outcome-oriented action plan with active public participation. He emphasised the need to ensure the involvement of parents, teachers, medical professionals, educational institutions, social and youth organisations, rehabilitation centres and local communities. He also stressed the importance of a holistic approach encompassing drug prevention, awareness, treatment and rehabilitation, along with strict action against the illegal trafficking and sale of narcotic substances.
The Governor directed that the safety and security of students studying in various universities and colleges, particularly those residing in private hostels and paying guest (PG) accommodations outside campus premises, be accorded priority. He called for regular patrolling and effective surveillance in such areas, strict action against illegal activities, and better coordination with the management of educational institutions to ensure a safe environment for students.
During the meeting, the Director General of Police briefed the Governor on the measures being undertaken and the achievements made in preventing cyber crimes and strengthening cyber security in the state. Appreciating these efforts, the Governor emphasised the need for extensive awareness campaigns to educate the general public, senior citizens, youth and students about cyber threats and preventive measures.
In view of the forthcoming Kumbh Mela, the Governor directed that preparations relating to security, traffic management and crowd management be strengthened in a time-bound manner. He stressed the need for effective coordination among various security agencies and concerned departments and called for the optimal use of modern technology to ensure a comprehensive and robust security arrangement.
The meeting also covered issues related to the health and welfare of police personnel and their families, residential facilities, Police Modern Schools, accident insurance, training and capacity building, police modernisation, and technological innovations. The Governor directed that, alongside the welfare of police personnel, continuous efforts should be made to strengthen the operational efficiency and technological capabilities of the police force through the effective adoption of modern technology and innovation.
