Lok Bhavan Dehradun/Rishikesh 09 October, 2026
Governor of Uttarakhand, Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.), participated in the National Conference and Policy Dialogue on Tuberculosis held at AIIMS Rishikesh on Friday. On the occasion, he said that eliminating tuberculosis is not limited to medical treatment and medicines, but requires timely diagnosis, appropriate treatment, adequate nutrition, public awareness and active participation of society. He emphasised the need to effectively leverage modern technology and scientific research in the fight against TB to ensure that every patient receives timely and appropriate treatment.
The Governor said that TB is not only a medical concern but also a social and economic challenge. Its impact extends beyond the health of the patient to their family, livelihood and social life. Therefore, a sensitive and supportive approach towards people affected by TB is essential. Appreciating initiatives such as the Pradhan Mantri TB Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, Nikshay Poshan Yojana, Nikshay Mitra initiative and TB Mukt Panchayat being implemented under the leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, he said that community participation is the greatest strength in realising the vision of a TB-free India.
The Governor said that in a Himalayan state like Uttarakhand, difficult geographical conditions, long distances and weather-related challenges can affect access to healthcare services. In such circumstances, modern technology can play a crucial role in overcoming these barriers. He described the use of drone technology by AIIMS Rishikesh to deliver TB medicines to remote areas as an inspiring initiative and said that the convergence of medical science, technology and administrative commitment can significantly improve healthcare access in remote regions.
The Governor said that the success of healthcare services should not be assessed merely on the basis of the number of tests conducted or the availability of medical equipment, but by how quickly a patient is correctly diagnosed and how soon treatment is initiated. He emphasised that the true value of scientific research and technology lies in their ability to make people’s lives safer and better.
Highlighting the important role of ASHA and other health workers, Nikshay Mitras and TB Champions in TB elimination, the Governor said that they serve as a vital link between communities and the healthcare system. He called for eliminating the stigma and misconceptions associated with TB and said that people affected by the disease need not distance or discrimination, but respect, trust and support.
The Governor said that the deliberations held during the national conference should translate into concrete action plans and effective policies. He expressed confidence that AIIMS Rishikesh can provide important leadership in this direction and that effective healthcare models developed here could serve as valuable models for other mountainous and remote regions of the country.
Health Minister Shri Subodh Uniyal, Executive Director of AIIMS Rishikesh Prof. Dr. Meenu Singh, Director of Policy Resilience Foundation Shri Nandish R. Paithani, Organising Chairperson Dr. Pratima Gupta, Dr. Girish Sindhwani and other doctors were present on the occasion.
