During his two-day visit to the district, Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) participated in various programs in Lansdowne, where he interacted with serving soldiers, ex-servicemen, and officers. On this occasion, he attended a military conference, encouraged the soldiers, and reviewed ongoing development works and government schemes in the district.
The Governor began the program by visiting the War Memorial, where he paid floral tributes to the brave martyrs who sacrificed their lives in the service of the nation. Thereafter, he attended the military conference organized for soldiers, ex-servicemen, and their families. The presence of Veer Matris (mothers of martyrs), Veer Naris (war widows), and military families made the event deeply emotional and filled with pride.
The Governor presented a special trophy to the Garhwal Rifles Centre in recognition of its outstanding contribution and glorious military traditions. Praising the bravery, discipline, and spirit of national service of the Garhwal Rifles, he said that the regiment has remained an enduring symbol of the nation’s security, courage, and sacrifice. He added that the Garhwal Rifles has made significant contributions to the nation through unmatched courage and dedication even under adverse circumstances.
During the event, the Garhwal Rifles honoured the Veer Naris of soldiers who made the supreme sacrifice in the defense of the nation. As the Veer Naris came onto the stage, the entire hall resonated with thunderous applause. Soldiers, veterans, and civilians present stood up to honour them. The scene was highly emotional and inspiring, leaving everyone deeply moved by the spirit of national service and sacrifice.
The Governor described the Veer Naris as symbols of the nation’s strength and dignity, stating that behind every soldier’s sacrifice lies the extraordinary courage and patience of their families, especially the Veer Naris. He said the country would always remain indebted to the sacrifices of martyrs and the contributions of their families.
Addressing the military conference, the Governor said the day was spiritually fulfilling and a matter of great fortune for him. He remarked that his 40 years of experience in the Army were the result of the blessings and grace of Lord Badri Vishal. He added that military life represents the highest ideals of discipline, dedication, and patriotism, and that the Indian Army has always been a symbol of the nation’s security and pride.
The Governor said Uttarakhand is the land of brave soldiers, where almost every family has a connection with the armed forces. The spirit of national service, he said, is inherent among the youth of the state, whose hearts always beat for the security of the nation. He further stated that the 139-year-old Garhwal Rifles Regiment is a matter of pride for the country and that the military centre has played a significant role in strengthening character-building, discipline, and the spirit of national service.
During the conference, Centre Commandant Brigadier Vinod Negi expressed gratitude to the Governor for his affection, blessings, and special attachment toward the Garhwal Rifles. He said the Governor’s warm connection with soldiers and military families further strengthens the morale of the troops. His inspiring words and guidance infused soldiers with renewed energy and enthusiasm.
