Dehradun is home to the Country’s finest institutes and it is of significant merit that it is informally known as the ‘Educational Capital of India.’ Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd) had a fruitful discussion with Director of National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) and honorary advisor to the Governor Professor S. C. Sharma regarding the enhancement of higher educational institutions in the State.

The Governor spoke of the various Universities and higher educational institutions that add to the glory that is Uttarakhand. Amidst discussions, he conversed about the efforts needed to ensure that all the institutes of the state aspire for higher ranks in NAAC grading. Research work should be given priority and brought to international standards.

During the discussion, Professor Sharma also put forth his views and requested for the establishment of a merit-based skill training center for women in Uttarakhand. He explained the need for special training programs that would greatly help disadvantaged women by empowering them, aiding them in skill development and increasing their employability quotient. The NAAC Director also enquired about the establishment of Advanced Study Institute for Earth and Material Science (Earth Study Center). In his opinion, the development of such an institution would help provide an in-depth detailed study of the environment and the earth.

Lastly he stressed on the construction of a specific Tourism Skill Center in Uttarakhand. Through this center, the people associated with the tourism business of the state could be made more efficient by ways of workshops and discussions. Not only would it strengthen their livelihood but also generate more employment opportunities in the State.

The Governor graciously welcomed the above suggestions and assured NAAC Director Professor Sharma that he would look into the development of the same to help establish Uttarakhand truly as an EMPOWERED STATE!
