07-10-2025 : Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) addressed an event held at the United Service Institution of India (USI) in New Delhi on Tuesday
The event was organized by the Strategic Think Tank of the Ministry of External Affairs and USI, one of the country’s most prestigious defense institutions.
The Governor shared his views on the special topic “Uttarakhand in India’s Strategic Vision: Pathways to Development and Security.” He stated that the development of the Himalayan border areas is not just a social or economic necessity, but is also essential for national security. The Governor stated that providing roads, schools, health centers, or other basic amenities in border villages is not merely a welfare measure, but also a step toward strengthening the country’s strategic security. He emphasized that border development is a strategic deterrent in itself.
The Governor emphasized that the geographical location of a mountainous state like Uttarakhand is crucial for national security, environmental protection, and water resource conservation. He emphasized that development and security cannot be viewed separately. Only when border areas are empowered and self-reliant will the borders be secure.
Sharing his experiences from his visits to more than 30 villages along the India-China-Nepal border, the Governor stated that there has been a significant shift in the mindset and self-confidence of the people in the border areas. He stated that local entrepreneurship, homestays, handicrafts, organic farming, and the activities of women’s self-help groups are reinvigorating the border communities. These initiatives have not only reduced migration but are also driving reverse migration from border villages.
The Governor emphasized that in a sensitive state like Uttarakhand, it is essential to consider geography, climate, and local culture when formulating development plans. He said that we need to develop solutions tailored to the Indian context and suited to Himalayan conditions. He said that partnerships and coordination between the armed forces, educational institutions, research centers, and the civil administration should be enhanced.
