06-04-2022 : Dr Jitendra Singh Shanty, founder of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal met the Governor

Dr Jitendra Singh Shanty, founder of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal met the Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd) on Tuesday. It is noteworthy that Dr. Jitendra Singh Shanty through his NGO Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal, has so far got thousands of unclaimed dead bodies cremated free of cost. More than 4500 dead bodies of needy have been cremated by Dr Jitendra Singh especially during the period of Covid-19. Dr. Jitendra Singh was awarded Padma Shri in the year 2021 for his humanitarian service.
Dr. Jitendra Singh Shanti proposed free funeral services for the dead bodies of the unclaimed and needy dead in emergency or disasters. Along with this, the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal offered free transport arrangements for the unclaimed dead bodies and the service of mobile refrigerator mortuaries to keep the dead bodies safe for a short period.
Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) appreciated the efforts being made by the Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal. Establishment of a centralized branch of Shaheed Bhagat Singh Seva Dal in Uttarakhand was also discussed between Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) and Dr Jitendra Singh Shunty. Through this branch, free van service for transportation of dead bodies during disasters and other emergency accidents, mobile refrigerator mortuary for protection of dead bodies, ambulance arrangement for patients will be made. Initially it is planned to be started in Dehradun as a pilot project. Governor Lt Gen Gurmit Singh (Retd) said that even the unclaimed and needy dead have the right to be cremated with dignity and respect. Governments as well as social workers and social institutions should consider this human aspect. The Governor said that during the Covid period, the police and various social organizations extended help for the last rites of the dead bodies of the needy. We got to see many excellent examples of humanity. We need to take inspiration from this.
