Governor Lieutenant General Gurmit Singh (Retd.) today held a courtesy meeting with three Indian High Commissioners at Lok Bhavan. The Governor met Shri Alok Ranjan Jha, High Commissioner of India to Zambia; Shri Devesh Uttam, High Commissioner of India to Lithuania; and Shri Mayank Joshi, High Commissioner of India to Jamaica.
During the meeting, the High Commissioners briefed the Governor on the activities and work being undertaken by Indian diplomatic missions in their respective countries. The Governor, in turn, apprised them of Uttarakhand’s distinctive cultural, spiritual and natural heritage, as well as the immense potential the state holds in the fields of tourism, healthcare and wellness.
The Governor said that Uttarakhand, with its rich spiritual and cultural heritage and centuries-old traditions of yoga and Ayurveda, has the potential to emerge as a major global destination for spiritual and wellness tourism. He urged the three High Commissioners to support efforts to promote Uttarakhand’s spiritual and wellness tourism potential, yoga, Ayurveda, millets, local and traditional products, and its unique homestay culture in their respective countries.
He said that such initiatives would help connect Uttarakhand’s local products and rural economy with international markets while creating new opportunities for the state’s youth and Self-Help Groups (SHGs).
The Governor also emphasised the potential for promoting local and traditional products prepared by women-led Self-Help Groups, along with millet-based products, in the respective countries. He said that Uttarakhand’s homestays, local cuisine, handicrafts and authentic rural experiences could become major attractions for international visitors seeking meaningful and immersive travel experiences.
The Governor particularly urged the High Commissioners to explore initiatives that could provide girls from Uttarakhand with greater opportunities for international exposure and learning. He suggested organising study tours and exposure visits for students from the state to the respective countries, enabling them to gain first-hand exposure to their education systems, culture, technology and professional practices.
He said such exchanges would not only broaden the horizons of young women from Uttarakhand but would also strengthen youth-to-youth and educational exchanges between India and these countries.
